In 1912, Edmund Dulac illustrated The Bells and Other Poems with twenty-eight color plates, this one for Poe's early, aching poem "Alone": "From childhood's hour I have not been / As others were." Dulac leaned on the same brooding, solitary-figure-under-a-vast-sky language as Caspar David Friedrich, filtered through his own jewel-toned, Art Nouveau eye. Over a century later, the loneliness still reads exactly the same.
