Midnight Light — Ilya Repin

In 1896, Ilya Repin painted Moonlit Night, Zdravnevo at his country estate on the Dvina River  a rare quiet moment from an artist better known for sweeping historical drama and unflinching portraiture. Away from the crowds and commissions, Repin let the brushwork loosen into something closer to Impressionism: silvered water, a still garden, light doing all the talking. Restored here for a room that could use a little of that hush.
