Everett Shinn trained his eye as a newspaper illustrator for the Philadelphia Press, a job that meant watching closely and finishing fast. In 1908 he exhibited with The Eight at New York's Macbeth Gallery, the group that turned American painting towards city life. Shinn's corner of that city was the theatre. He cropped his views close to the stage and lit them like a performance, and he was drawn to the hours the audience never sees. A rehearsal is one of them: the work that makes a ballet look effortless, still in progress. Restored from the original for print.

Printing Guide

How to print your art

Your download has every file you need to print at home, at a print shop or online. Download it on a computer over Wi-Fi. The files are large because they're made for big prints.

1. Pick the file that fits your frame
Each file is named after the largest size it prints, and it also prints any smaller frame of the same shape. The 24x30in file prints 8x10 and 16x20. The 24x36in file prints 12x18 and 20x30. The A1 file prints every A size, from A5 to A1. Odd-sized frame? Use the Original.

2. Choose your paper
Matte or fine art paper suits old paintings best: no glare, softer colour. At home, use heavy card stock or matte photo paper.

3. Before you pay
- Check the preview. Some services crop or rotate your image on upload.
- Switch off auto-enhance. The colours are already restored.
- Printing at home? Set it to 100% or "actual size", not "fit to page".

4. Where to print
Anywhere: your local print shop. Bring the file on a USB stick or email it over. Usually the cheapest and fastest.
