The Dreamer of Dreams — Edmund Dulac

In 1915, Edmund Dulac illustrated The Dreamer of Dreams, a fairy tale written by Queen Marie of Romania — one of the last great collaborations of his golden-age period, painted in the same jewel-toned washes and Persian-influenced patterning he'd perfected on the Rubaiyat and the Arabian Nights. This plate shows a robed figure adrift somewhere between waking and sleep, half dissolved into ornament. Restored here for a wall that could use a little more mystery.
